Dental Crowns in Sydney

When Might a Dental Crown Help?

A dental crown covers a tooth that needs more support than a filling can provide. It may be considered for significant damage, wear, a large existing filling or a tooth that has had root canal treatment. Your dentist will assess the remaining tooth, gums and bite, then explain suitable materials and alternatives. Crowns require tooth preparation and can need repair or replacement over time.

Some ceramic crowns can be made using computer-aided design and manufacturing. A single-visit crown may be suitable in selected cases; other teeth and materials require separate appointments. We will confirm the approach and fees after assessing your tooth.

CAD/CAM ceramic crowns start from $1,800 each, with a five-year limited warranty subject to the conditions below. Ask whether this crown material and a single-visit approach are suitable for your tooth.

Prices may change. Your current written quotation will confirm the fee before treatment.

Conditions apply; ask for the complete package terms before accepting treatment.

Five-year limited warranty conditions: retain your receipt and attend six-monthly routine dental check-ups and cleans at one of the group’s practices throughout the warranty period. Cover is for replacement when the crown fractures because of a mechanical fault. It excludes trauma or accident-related failure, decay, gum disease, and root canal treatment recommended by the treating dentist before treatment began.

Implant crowns are excluded from this package and quoted separately according to materials and components.

We will explain suitable options, their costs and limitations so you can decide how to proceed.

Some crowns are made in a dental laboratory and others use an in-practice digital workflow. The appropriate method depends on the restoration and clinical requirements.

If a single-visit ceramic crown is suitable, your dentist will explain the scanning, design and manufacturing stages. A separate laboratory appointment may be recommended for other materials or more complex requirements.

A crown is recommended only after assessing how much healthy tooth remains and whether another restoration could provide adequate support. Your dentist will explain the proposed treatment, alternatives and likely maintenance before you decide.

A crown does not treat every cause of sensitivity or toothache. Preparation removes tooth tissue and may cause sensitivity; some teeth later need root canal treatment. Crowns can also chip or loosen. We will discuss these risks alongside the expected benefits and costs.

    How Ceramic Crowns Are Made

    1. Scan: record the tooth and surrounding bite.

    2. Design: plan the crown’s shape and contacts.

    3. Manufacture: make the crown from the selected material.

Computer-aided design and manufacturing can be used to produce a custom crown from a digital record. Your dentist will explain whether this workflow is available and suitable for your tooth, then check the fit and bite before placement.

Crowns can remain functional for many years, but their lifespan varies with the tooth, material, bite, oral hygiene and habits such as grinding. A crown may need repair or replacement if it chips, loosens or if decay develops around it. Regular reviews help identify problems early.

Some ceramic crowns can be completed in one visit; others require two or more appointments.

The dentist first examines the tooth and takes any necessary imaging. After preparation, a scan or impression is used to make the crown. If it is produced between appointments, a temporary crown may protect the tooth until the final crown is checked and secured.

Your treatment plan will set out the expected appointments, temporary restoration needs and likely timing for your chosen material.

Local anaesthetic is usually used when preparing a tooth for a crown. You may still notice pressure during treatment and sensitivity or soreness afterwards. Tell your dentist about anxiety or previous difficulty getting numb so suitable comfort measures can be discussed.

Your dentist selects the shade and shape with your surrounding teeth in mind. A precise match is not always possible, especially when teeth have different translucency or existing restorations. If you are considering whitening, discuss it before choosing the crown shade, because crowns do not whiten like natural teeth.

IPS e.max by Ivoclar Vivadent is a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic. It is often chosen where appearance matters, such as front teeth, because it can closely imitate the translucency of natural enamel. Your dentist will advise whether it suits your tooth and bite.

It depends on the tooth. E.max is usually chosen for its natural appearance, while zirconia is a very strong ceramic that is often considered for back teeth or for people who grind their teeth. Your dentist will recommend a material after assessing your tooth, bite and goals.
