Orthodontic Braces in Sydney

Fixed braces move teeth using brackets bonded to the teeth and a wire that applies light, continuous force. They may be suitable for crowding, spacing and certain bite problems. Your dentist will compare appropriate options, their limitations and any need for specialist referral.

Braces are provided at our Pitt Street practice by our general dentists. We do not hold specialist orthodontic registration; where a case calls for a registered orthodontic specialist, we will tell you and refer you.

What Braces Can Address

  • Crowded or overlapping teeth
  • Gaps and spacing
  • Bite problems including overbite, underbite and crossbite
  • Teeth that have shifted after previous orthodontic treatment

Aligning teeth can also make them easier to clean, which supports gum health over time. Whether that benefit applies to you depends on your starting point and your oral hygiene.

Braces or Invisalign?

Both move teeth; they suit different cases. Fixed braces handle a wider range of movements and do not depend on the patient remembering to wear them. Clear aligners are removable and less visible, which many adults prefer, but they only work while they are in. Your dentist will set out which is appropriate for your case and why, and you are entitled to a second opinion.

What Treatment Involves

Assessment. Examination, photographs and X-rays, and a discussion of what you want to change.

Fitting. Brackets are bonded to the teeth and the wire is placed. Teeth are commonly tender for a few days afterwards and again after adjustments.

Adjustments. Reviews roughly every four to six weeks to progress the treatment.

Retention. Retainers are required once braces come off. Teeth move back without them — retention is part of the treatment, not an optional extra.

Treatment length varies with the case; many take somewhere between twelve and twenty-four months, but yours will be estimated at assessment.

Risks You Should Know About

Orthodontic treatment carries risks. These include decalcification or decay around brackets where cleaning is not thorough, gum inflammation, root shortening, relapse if retainers are not worn, and discomfort after fitting and adjustments. Your dentist will discuss the risks that apply to your case before treatment starts.

Cost and Payment

Fees depend on the complexity of the case, the type of brackets and how long treatment runs. You will be given a written quote after assessment, covering the full course of treatment and what it includes. Payment plans through third-party providers are available, subject to their eligibility criteria and terms, and health funds with orthodontic cover may contribute depending on your policy, waiting periods and limits.
