Regular check-ups are how most dental problems get found while they are still small. Routine visits let us pick up decay, gum disease and wear early, when treatment is simpler and less expensive than it would be later. They also matter for anyone with veneers, crowns or implants: restorations last longer when the teeth and gums supporting them stay healthy.
You do not need to be a cosmetic patient to book a check-up with us.
At a check-up your dentist examines your teeth, gums and soft tissues, and may take X-rays to look for problems that are not visible on the surface. A scale and clean removes plaque and hardened tartar that brushing cannot shift. Routine examinations also include screening of the soft tissues; where anything unusual is found, your dentist will explain what they have seen and what the options are, including referral where that is appropriate.
Six to twelve months suits most adults, but the right interval depends on your circumstances. Patients with active gum disease, a history of decay, dry mouth, or risk factors such as smoking or a high-sugar diet may be advised to come more often. Your dentist will recommend an interval based on what they find rather than a fixed rule.
Do not wait for a scheduled visit if something changes. Pain, bleeding gums, a chipped tooth, a loose crown or a change in how your bite feels are all reasons to book sooner.
Examination. Your dentist checks your teeth, gums and soft tissues, and reviews any X-rays taken.
Scale and clean. Plaque and tartar are removed, and your teeth are polished. If you have sensitive teeth, tell your clinician beforehand so they can adjust their approach.
Discussion. You will be told what was found, what treatment is recommended if any, what it involves and what it costs, before anything is booked.
All dental treatment carries some risk. Cleaning can cause temporary sensitivity or gum tenderness, particularly where there is existing gum disease. X-rays involve a small radiation dose, which is why they are taken only when clinically indicated. Your dentist will discuss the risks relevant to any treatment they recommend before you agree to it.
