Professional Cleaning for Teeth & Gums

Professional cleaning removes plaque and hardened deposits from teeth and helps the dental team assess areas that are difficult to clean at home. The type and frequency of cleaning depend on your gum health and individual needs.

A scale and clean complements daily brushing and cleaning between your teeth. At Sydney Dental Veneers | Cosmetique Dental, we explain the findings and practical steps to support your oral health between visits.

Questions About Your Cleaning Appointment

A relaxed patient sitting comfortably in a modern dental chair, smiling during a routine visit.

Your dentist or oral health therapist assesses the gums and uses appropriate instruments to remove plaque and tartar. You may notice vibration, water and suction during treatment.

Polishing may be used to remove some surface stains and remaining soft deposits. The approach is selected for your teeth and any sensitivity.

The clinician may also clean between teeth and demonstrate areas where a change to your home-care routine could help.

Fluoride treatment may be recommended according to your decay risk. If it is applied, follow the instructions for that product about eating and drinking afterwards.

Some people experience sensitivity during a clean, particularly with inflamed gums or exposed root surfaces. Tell your clinician if an area is uncomfortable.

We can discuss breaks, technique adjustments and other suitable comfort measures. If you are anxious, let us know when booking so the visit can be planned with your concerns in mind.

Dental cleaning uses instruments selected to remove deposits while caring for the tooth and gum surfaces. It supports management of plaque-related gum inflammation but does not replace daily oral hygiene. Your clinician will discuss the findings, expected sensitivity and any further gum treatment needed.

A clean can remove some external staining, but it does not bleach the underlying tooth colour. If you are considering a colour change, ask whether whitening or another cosmetic option is suitable after your oral health is assessed.

  • New patients without insurance: $199 for an examination, scale and clean, and dental X-rays where clinically necessary.
    • Returning patients: $188 with the designated dental hygienist, including examination, consultation, scale and clean.
    • Additional treatment is quoted separately. Ask for item numbers and check your own health fund benefits; no-gap care is not assured.

If gum assessment identifies periodontal disease, cleaning below the gumline may be recommended. This differs from a routine clean and can involve separate appointments and local anaesthetic.

Your clinician may record gum measurements to determine which areas need care. Ask for a personalised plan explaining the treatment, follow-up visits and fees.
