Invisalign is offered in four levels: Express, Lite, Moderate and Comprehensive. They differ mainly in how much tooth movement is planned, and therefore how many aligners and how much time your treatment may need. You don’t choose a level from a menu; your dentist recommends one after scanning your teeth and planning the movements.
The Four Levels at a Glance
| Level | Typically suits | Example concerns |
|---|---|---|
| Express | Selected minor corrections | A slightly rotated tooth, minor relapse after earlier braces |
| Lite | Selected limited alignment needs | Mild crowding or small gaps at the front |
| Moderate | Suitable intermediate cases | Moderate crowding or spacing, some bite adjustment |
| Comprehensive | More involved treatment | Significant crowding, spacing or bite correction |
Suitability for each level is assessed by your dentist. Some complex cases may be better treated with braces or by a specialist orthodontist.
How Your Dentist Decides
At your assessment, your dentist takes a digital scan and photographs, and checks your bite, gums and existing dental work. The scan is used to plan the movements step by step. The number of steps needed largely decides the level. You can usually see a simulation of the planned movement before you commit.
Express and Lite: Small Changes
Express and Lite suit limited, mostly cosmetic changes at the front of the mouth. They are common for adults whose teeth have shifted slightly since earlier orthodontics, or before veneers or bonding to create even spacing. See Invisalign before veneers.
Moderate and Comprehensive: Bigger Changes
Moderate and Comprehensive suit more movement, including more crowding or spacing and some bite corrections. Treatment usually takes longer, and refinements (extra aligners to fine-tune the result) may be part of the plan.
What Affects Treatment Time?
- How far the teeth need to move
- Your bite and the type of movements needed
- Wear time: aligners need to be worn most of the day and night
- Whether refinements are needed at the end
Your dentist will estimate your treatment time after planning.
After Treatment
Retainers are needed long term to stop teeth drifting back. Your dentist will explain the retainer options. If you are planning veneers or whitening after straightening, these usually follow once teeth have settled.
Invisalign or Braces?
For many mild to moderate cases, Invisalign is a discreet option. Braces can handle a wider range of complex movements and don’t rely on wear time. Read Invisalign vs braces.
