Chipped or Broken Veneer? Emergency Veneer Repair in Sydney CBD

Chipped, cracked or lost a veneer?

A chipped or loose veneer is rarely dangerous, but it can be uncomfortable and it’s hard to ignore when it’s on a front tooth. Here’s what to do straight away:

  • Keep the veneer or any pieces in a clean container and bring them with you.
  • Don’t glue it back with household or nail glue. It can damage the tooth and make repair harder.
  • Avoid biting on that tooth and avoid very hot, cold or hard food until you’re seen.
  • Cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum or dental wax from a pharmacy.
  • Sensitivity: use toothpaste for sensitive teeth and take over-the-counter pain relief if needed, following the packet.

Call (02) 8090 1105 and we’ll do our best to see you quickly, or book online. We’re at Suite 302, Level 3, 70 Pitt Street, Sydney, near Wynyard and Martin Place stations, and open Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm.

What your appointment involves

Your dentist will examine the veneer and the tooth underneath and take an x-ray to check the tooth is healthy. An emergency appointment with an exam and OPG x-ray starts at $195. Depending on what has happened, options may include:

  • Re-bonding a veneer that has come off in one piece, if it still fits well and the tooth is healthy.
  • Smoothing a very small chip.
  • A composite repair for some chips. Composite veneers start from $700 per tooth.
  • A new porcelain veneer when the veneer is cracked or broken. Porcelain veneers start from $1,490 per tooth and are made in our in-house ceramic lab in North Sydney.

Your dentist will explain your options and the cost before any treatment starts. All dental treatment carries risks; see our treatment risks page.

Other cosmetic dental emergencies

  • Broken or lost crown: keep the crown and bring it with you. Porcelain crowns start from $1,800. See dental crowns.
  • Chipped front tooth: small chips can often be repaired with tooth-coloured composite.
  • Lost filling: keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side until you’re seen.

Go to a hospital emergency department or call 000 for a serious facial injury, facial swelling that is spreading, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or bleeding that won’t stop.

Helping your veneers last

  • Grinding or clenching: a custom night splint can protect veneers while you sleep. Occlusal splints start from $780.
  • Hard food and habits: avoid biting ice, pens, fingernails or opening packets with your teeth.
  • Sport: wear a mouthguard for contact sports.
  • Regular check-ups: your dentist can spot wear or a lifting edge early.

Veneer repair FAQs

Can a veneer that has fallen off be stuck back on?

Sometimes. If the veneer has come off in one piece, still fits well and the tooth underneath is healthy, it may be possible to re-bond it. Your dentist will check this at your appointment.

How much does it cost to fix a chipped veneer?

An emergency appointment with an exam and OPG x-ray starts at $195. A composite repair or new veneer is quoted after your dentist has examined the tooth. Composite veneers start from $700 and porcelain veneers from $1,490 per tooth.

Should I glue my veneer back on myself?

No. Household glues can damage the tooth and the veneer and make a proper repair harder. Keep the veneer safe and bring it with you.
